Independent Family Mediation Service

About us

Founded in 1999, Mediation First provides an essential service (totally independent of solicitors and courts) to people facing issues connected with separation and divorce. We provide a comfortable, friendly and neutral environment where we work with people and help them to make informed decisions relating to child arrangements and finances. Over the past 20 years, our team have successfully mediated in thousands of cases. We believe that, with the right information and the right setting, people can be empowered to make their own decisions relating to children and finances. This philosophy is key to the success of Mediation First and we can help you to sort out plans for children and/or financial issues quickly and effectively, avoiding court and costly, lengthy and stressful negotiations through solicitors.

Whether your issues relate to child arrangements, parental responsibility, money, housing, pensions or maintenance, Mediation First offers a flexible, empowering and cost effective alternative to negotiations through solicitors. We help you keep control and resolve your own issues, while providing vital legal information in a neutral and non-judgemental setting.

Mediation is vastly cheaper than negotiating through solicitors. Using solicitors to negotiate and/or make applications to Court in relation to Child Arrangements is likely to costs thousands of pounds. If you are using solicitors to negotiate and/or apply to Court in respect of finances on divorce/ property matters, the costs may well run into the tens of thousands. In contrast, mediation sessions cost £175 per person (inclusive of VAT) and, on average, clients attend 1-3 sessions. You are only charged for the time you spend face-to-face with the mediator making it easy to keep track, and control, of costs.

Mediation can also be a much more efficient way of resolving disputes. At Mediation First, couples usually successfully mediate their case within a few weeks. The National Audit Office indicates that the average case negotiated through solicitors takes 12 to 18 months.

This service also has a legal aid contract - for more information about legal aid go to our legal aid page
